Here’s the latest. It isn’t a trust account scam.
The State Bar of Nevada reports a phishing scam in which an email is intended to look like a “State Bar” complaint. The alert notes that the scam has been reported in California. The scam has also been reported in Florida.
There has not been a single report of this happening in Vermont.
However, a few things.
- Vermont is not a unified bar Our disciplinary program is part of the Judiciary, not the Bar Association. Therefore, there will never be an instance in which the Vermont Bar Association (or anyone with a vtbar.org email address) notifies you that a “state bar” complaint has been filed against you.
- I screen all ethics complaint. I use email to notify attorneys that an ethics complaint has been filed & I attach a PDF of the complaint. I use my work email account: firstname.lastname@example.org
- If you have ANY question as to whether an email purporting to notify you that an ethics complaint has been filed against you is really from me, please call. My direct line is 802-859-3004.
- As you know, it’s relicensing season. The Attorney Licensing office is notifying lawyers by email of the June 30 deadline. Again, if you have any question as to whether an email purporting to include a link to the online relicensing portal is valid, please call me.
